For complete information or to register, visit www.shalomaustin.org/tapestry.

Our own Rabbi Kerry Baker will teach “The Rabbis’ View of People of Color”

Our recent national election signals a great cultural and political shift in the United States. It’s become more important than ever before for the Jewish community to understand and clarify its relationship to people of color in general and the African-American community in particular. We need to move beyond the comparatively recent history of the civil rights movement, affirmative action, and other questions of social policy to study what our most fundamental sources, the Torah and rabbinic literature, have to say about people of color, including the spiritual significance of cultural and racial diversity, and the relationship among ethnic groups prescribed by our tradition. In this class we will study a variety of texts that touch upon these questions, and provide an opportunity to discuss our own feelings and attitudes as we look forward to the changes that our society will inevitably undergo in the wake of the presidential election.
