Community Service Opportunity
CKH member Margaret O’Sullivan writes: Paladin Community Mental Health Center is a partial hospitalization program in Austin. We have many wonderful clients who would be most deeply appreciative for any donated clothes, particularly larger sizes for women and any sizes for men. They do not have to be in great condition as our clients will appreciate anything as they cannot afford to buy even used clothes in most cases. Also, if any Kol Halev members would like to volunteer to become a one-to- one mentor/friend with a client of Paladin please let Margaret O’Sullivan know at margo1216@austin.rr.com or 345-8287. An hour or two every week or two weeks (not at our center as we have classes the entire time they are with us) would be so meaningful to one of our clients and it is a particularly gratifying experience.
Austin Area Interreligious Ministries CROP Hunger Walk
Saturday, March 7th, at 9:30 am and Sunday, March 8th at 2:30 pm
Roy Guerrero Colorado River Park (off East Riverside Drive, near the ACC Riverside campus).
Hunger Walk is an annual nationwide event sponsored locally by Austin Area Interreligious Ministries (AAIM). In 2008, walkers representing some 110 faith communities and other organizations in Austin raised almost $140,000. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised stay in Austin to support food needs in local agencies including: AAIM for Refugees, Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, Foundation for the Homeless, Casa Marianella, Refugee Services of Texas, and Urban Roots, in addition to local food pantries. The rest go to more than 80 countries to alleviate hunger worldwide. The Walk itself is about one mile long, along a nature trail, and strollers and dogs on leashes are welcome.
Local faith and civic groups of all kinds are invited to create WALK teams. The Walk raises money through individual walkers’ pledge forms. There is not a minimum required for participation. You do not have to walk to raise money, and you do not have to raise money to walk. Organizing your team and fund raising can be done online through the organization that sponsors the Walk nationally, Church World Service: www.cropwalkonline.org.
