In the Community

Amigos de las Americas Fundraiser
Thursday, April 30th, 6:30 – 9:00 pm, Laguna Gloria, 3809 W. 35th St.

Emma Weizenbaum, daughter of Jon
Weizenbaum and Nancy Nussbaum, is part of an organization called Amigos de las Americas, that places American students in summer community development projects in rural Latin America.

Emma writes, “Last summer I spent six weeks in the mountains of La Paz, Honduras. My summer working with Amigos had a tremendous impact on my life and was filled with fun, challenging, and transformative experiences. This summer I’ve decided to return, and I will be working on a project in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Matagalpa is a mountainous coffee growing region, with famously cool weather and spectacular cloud forests. The partner agency I will be working with is CARE, and the general project will be focused on health education in addition to community based initiatives.”

Amigos is hosting a fundraiser to support students’ travel and to provide materials for their projects!  This year’s “Fiesta” will be held on Thursday, April 30th from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Laguna Gloria/Austin Museum of Art (3809 W. 35th St.).  Listen to live music by The Crying Monkeys and enjoy food by El Chile and drinks by Richard’s Liquors & Fine Wines.  Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.  There will be a live and silent auction … if you have a business or profession that would like to contribute something to the auction, that would be most welcome!

If you are interested in supporting Amigos, attending the benefit, donating to the auction, or just learning more about Amigos, contact Emma.
