Like
many other aspects of Congregation Kol Halev, the B'nai Mitzvah Program is
unique - decidedly different from that of other congregations. Rather than
attending classes several times a week, students work individually, with
their family, in study groups and with Rabbi Baker to learn about Judaism
in preparation for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Cantor Sherwin works with the
families choosing the music with the most meaning for the family's
background, style and preferences.
The
program involves learning to read Hebrew (usually with a tutor), doing
assigned readings and discussing them with the Rabbi, and completing
projects on topics ranging from Jewish identity, history and religious
practices to Jewish literature, art, music and film.
The
students also do a Mitzvah Project and attend monthly meetings with their
B'nai Mitzvah Group peers. The program is very adaptable to individual
student interests and learning styles. Bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies are
individually planned and as unique as the course of study of each student.
Parents play an active role in developing the Kol Halev B'nai Mitzvah
program and in helping their children accomplish their Bar/Bat Mitzvah
goals.
The program fee is $500 per
year ($1500 total). Payment can be made when the child begins
meeting on a regular basis with Rabbi Baker (approximately three years prior
to Bar/Bat Mitzvah). Program fees can be paid monthly, and will be
prorated to the beginning of our fiscal year (July 1 through June 30).
Hebrew and musical tutoring
are not included in the program fee, and is handled directly between the
B'nai Mitzvot family and the tutor.
To enroll your child in the
B'nai Mitzvah program, please contact Karen Glina at bookkeeper@kolhalev.org at
or Cindy Tarsi at administrator@kolhalev.org
to
have your child's name added to the group list. An appointment will be
made for you to visit with Rabbi Baker and to receive a checklist of
materials and activities you and your child must complete.
