Kol Halev Presents Dr. Larry Lesser -
Mathmusician/Gematrist
University of Texas
- El Paso
mathematics education professor (and former Austinite) Dr. Larry Lesser
will be giving a special presentation combining his love of math and
Judaism at Congregation Kol Halev at Shabbat services on Friday,
February 17. Dr. Lesser, who is eclectic in his math teaching and
in
his Judaism, enjoys discovering and sharing connections between both
realms. His laid back, humorous style includes a user-friendly sharing
of various connections between math and Judaism, including gematria,
(numerological connections of Hebrew words and phrases) logic, pi,
Bible Codes, and infinity. Lesser fine-tuned his in-demand presentation
during his two years as math department chair at the Emery-Weiner
School in Houston. Parts of this material have been also used at the
International ALEPH Kallah, Houston’s Yom Limmud (Day of Learning), and
at various individual congregations in Texas and Colorado. Dr.
Lesser's appearance at Kol Halev is free and open to the public. A
festive Oneg Shabbat will follow services. All are welcome. Mark
your
calendar!
February
B'Nai Mitzvah event
It's
time for the second annual CKH B'Nai Mitzvah group Freescale Marathon
water stop extravaganza!!! It was a wonderful experience last
year,
lots of fun and hard work - and a chance to be up and out bright and
early. Here's some preliminary information. If you did not
receive
the details by email, contact Michele Chandler
<mchandlerlmsw@sbcglobal.net> or call 394-0993.
Professional
Services Database
CKH has always
emphasized the
importance of community. At the request
of Rabbi Baker, Misha ben-David is assembling a roster of CKH members
and their
professional skills. We specifically seek those with human services
skills and training; such as physicians, psychotherapists, social
workers, counselors, etc. By having this information at hand, you
will
have some excellent choices from within the CKH community when you seek
professional services. There may also be rare occasions where it would
be helpful to call on you in an emergency situation. If you would
please take a moment to email Chaplain
Misha ben-David <mbd@austin.rr.com>, you would be performing
a mitzvahs that will benefit the entire congregation.

Social Action / Mitzvah
Amazingly, it is
time once again for the Crop Walk. While our congregation is busy ensuring our
organization's financial stability, it is still important to remember that there are many in our
community and around the globe who lack adequate nutrition on a regular
basis. If
this is an issue of importance to you, please consider donating money and/or walking
with other Austinites on March 5th, starting at the Roy Guerrero Colorado River
Park. For more information please contact Cyral Miller
<miller-jones@lycos.com> or 371-3014.
Mazel Tov
Mazel tov to

who was born on Thursday, February 2nd in Portland Oregon.
