Torah study is canceled Tuesday, January 2nd and will resume January 9th.

We will NOT have a Rebbe's Tisch (or other service) on Friday, January 5th.

A kiddish luncheon follows the service. If you would like to help sponsor the luncheons, send your tax-deductible contributions to the CKH office (with a note designating if for this purpose).

Torah Meets Tinseltown, Saturday, January 13th, 6:30pm, Rabbi & Lynda Baker's house.
Come to the second meeting of "Torah Meets Tinseltown" at Chez Baker. We will observe Havdalah at 6:30 pm. Then Rabbi Baker will give a brief introduction to the move. We’ll watch and talk about “The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob.” Here’s something about the film, for those who haven’t seen it: In this French comedy, Louis de Funes stars as Victor Pivert, a hopelessly bigoted man. Victor loves people, as long as they're Caucasian, French, and Catholic. But when it comes to foreigners, Victor draws the line. His ultimate nightmare becomes a reality the day of his daughter's wedding, when he stumbles across a group of Arab revolutionaries and is forced into hiding as a rabbi. The film is widely regarded as one of the great masterpieces of French comedy, and has become a cult classic. It is also seen as one of the best socially-aware films, as the topic of the film (racism) is actually very serious. It contains funny (but clever) musings about a multicultural society and also delivers a powerful statement in favor of tolerance and understanding. The handshake between Slimane and Salomon at the end of the movie (despite their differences, the Jew helped the Muslim) is a beautiful mark of understanding, full of reason. After the movie Rabbi Baker will lead a discussion. Please RSVP at 419-0945 or <rabbi@kolhalev.org>.

The First 2007 Community Relations Council Meeting, Tuesday, January 9th, 6:30 pm, JCAA.
The Community Relations Council (CRC) of the JCAA is the central umbrella organization for public affairs that brings together Jewish organizations and religious institutions in Austin.  The guiding parameters for CRC fall within the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam, "repairing the world;" we pursue this lofty mission through words and deeds which focus on Tzedek, the belief that we are responsible for creating an environment which provides safety, security and justice for each human being.

We are working to strengthen our CRC to engage members of the community in important work and, most importantly, to work together to have a positive impact within our community, in Israel and throughout the world.  We need dedicated members of the Jewish community - representing all aspects of our Jewish community - to join us in our mission of Tikkun Olam.

We will discuss the CRC agenda for the year at this meeting, including plans for the 2007 Yom HaShoah Commemoration.  A kosher deli dinner will be provided.  Please confirm your attendance to Dana Epstein, CRC Assistant Director, no later than Friday, December 29, 2006.

A Call for Table Captains
The Eighth Annual JCAA Women's Division Mosaic luncheon, featuring speaker Roya Hakakian, will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at the Renaissance Austin Hotel from 11am - 1pm.  Table captains are needed for this year's Mosaic luncheon.  As a table captain, you will recruit nine other women to sit at your table and educate them about the minimum gift for this event.  You will be invited to a short table captain training session on January 9th, 2007.  To sign up to be a table captain, please contact Arlene Maze (345-8549) or <afmaze@swebell.net> or Candy Goldstein (346-4168) or <canland1@aol.com>.  To make reservations for the Mosaic luncheon contact Alison Cassorla at 735-8020 or <alison.cassorla@shalomaustin.org>.  For more information about Mosaic 2007, speaker, raffle items and ways to purchase raffle tickets, go to www.shalomaustin.org/mosaic.
