Congregation Kol Halev Newsletter,
January 9, 2007 / 19 Tevet 5767

This Week at Kol Halev:
Early Family Shabbat Service with Religious School Co-op,
Friday, January 12th, 6:30 pm, ECP Multi-purpose Room.
Students in CKH’s Sunday School Co-op will lead the service. A
wonderful potluck dinner (dairy/pareve) will follow the service,
including another culinary surprise sponsored by the Rabbi
Discretionary Fund (last time, everyone enjoyed Amy’s Ice Cream
cart!).
Chevrat Shlosha Devarim (CSD), Saturday, January 13th,
10:00 am, JCAA Community Hall.
Join us as young and old alike help lead this warm and intimate
service. Many of our B'nai Mitzvah students (past & present)
lead prayers and chant Torah. Please contact Reuven Robbins
(453-5456 or <rrobbins@austin.rr.com>
) if you would like a part in the service. A kiddish luncheon
follows the service. If you would like to help sponsor the
luncheons, send your tax-deductible contributions to the CKH
office (with a note designating if for this purpose).
Torah Meets Tinseltown, Saturday, January 13th, 6:30pm,
Rabbi & Lynda Baker's house.
Come to the second meeting of "Torah Meets Tinseltown"
at Chez Baker. We will observe Havdalah at 6:30 pm. Then Rabbi
Baker will give a brief introduction to the move. We’ll watch
and talk about “The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob.” Here’s
something about the film, for those who haven’t seen it: In this
French comedy, Louis de Funes stars as Victor Pivert, a hopelessly
bigoted man. Victor loves people, as long as they're Caucasian,
French, and Catholic. But when it comes to foreigners, Victor
draws the line. His ultimate nightmare becomes a reality the day
of his daughter's wedding, when he stumbles across a group of Arab
revolutionaries and is forced into hiding as a rabbi. The film is
widely regarded as one of the great masterpieces of French comedy,
and has become a cult classic. It is also seen as one of the best
socially-aware films, as the topic of the film (racism) is
actually very serious. It contains funny (but clever) musings
about a multicultural society and also delivers a powerful
statement in favor of tolerance and understanding. The handshake
between Slimane and Salomon at the end of the movie (despite their
differences, the Jew helped the Muslim) is a beautiful mark of
understanding, full of reason. After the movie Rabbi Baker will
lead a discussion. Please RSVP
at 419-0945 or <rabbi@kolhalev.org>.
Sisterhood Meeting, Sunday, January 14th, 10:30 am,
Lobby of the Education Building of the JCAA.
Adult Torah Study, Sunday, January 14th, 11:00 am, CKH

Torah Study, Tuesday, January 16th, Noon, CKH Office.

.... Next Week
....
Shabbat Service, Friday, January 19th, 7:30 pm,
ECP Multi-purpose Room.
We will host a special guest speaker, Rick Goldberg, who currently
writing and editing a book on Judaism and evolutionary biology. Rick
will present something very special during the d’var torah slot. He’s
going to explain how biology effects both the development of Judaism and
the view of Judaism by gentiles, using the window of how the
anti-Semitic belief that Jews have horns came to be and has persisted to
the present day. This should be a fascinating presentation and
discussion. Children who attend the service will
have a special program honoring Tu B'shevat, the New Year for the
Trees. Come find out how chocolate grows on trees! And meet the Jewish
Rip Van Winkle ,a.k.a." Honi Ha M'agel!"
Daniel Graves Bar Mitzvah, Saturday, January
20th, 10:00 am, JCAA Community Hall.
The Graves family would like to invite the congregation to join them in
celebrating Daniel's Bar Mitzvah. Kiddush luncheon following service. Please
RSVP to Diane Graves <dsgraves@austin.rr.com>
(so she can plan for the luncheon).
Torah Study, Tuesday, January 16th, Noon, CKH
Office.
Haverim Ke'tanim (Little Friends), January
20th, 5:00 pm, la Madeleine (restaurant), 3418
N. Lamar Blvd.
After a wonderful learning and worship experience featuring stories,
music, arts & crafts, games and a kid-friendly Havdalah service, the
kindergartners, pre-schoolers and their families can stay for dinner and
get to know each other, schedule play-dates, etc.
Sundays in the Park (with Rebbe) Returns,
Sunday, January 21st, 10:00 am, Central Market Café, 4001
N. Lamar Blvd.
“Sundays in the Park with Rebbe” is the title of Rabbi Baker’s
Sunday morning series of discussions at the Central Market Café from
10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. This year’s series features topics taken
from “You Be the Judge,” a book by Joel Lurie Grishaver which
presents a number of provocative ethical dilemmas, quandaries, and
challenges with a Jewish, spiritual or moral twist—and a proposed
Jewish resolution, all of which is fair game for our discussion over
gourmet coffee and nosherei (little stuff to nibble). Here are the kind
of the dilemmas we’ll consider: The Kippah That Was Too Trustworthy,
The Nolan Ryan Rookie Card Caper, Can You Cheat at Torah?, and How Long
Is ‘Til Death Do Us Part’?

Adult Education Classes
Continue
(beginning) Monday, January
15th, 7:00 pm, CKH Office
Rabbi Baker will teach a four week course
called “Sunrise, Sunset: Making Life Holy Through the Life-cycle”

learn about the spiritual, historical, social, and cultural meaning of
covenant ceremonies for boys and girls (brit milah and brit chayim), bar
and bat mitzvah, weddings (nisiu’in), and death and mourning rituals.
[This course is part of a series of Monday evening adult education
classes led by Rabbi Baker. Topics of subsequent classes are: “Being
Jewish Means Acting Jewish: Essential Jewish Values and How to Live
Them,” “Being Jewish Means Thinking Jewish: Essential Insights of
Modern Jewish Thinkers,” and “Being Jewish Means Experiencing
Jewish: Essential Ways Jewish Mystics Encounter the World.” These
classes are open to CKH members and their friends (from whom a donation
is requested). All these classes count toward preparation for adult
bar/bat mitzvah, as well.] Call CKH (419-0945) or Rabbi Baker (947-6000)

Invitation to
Mosaic Luncheon .... from Debby Kalk
Please join me for the JCAA Women’s
Division 8th annual Mosaic luncheon featuring speaker Roya Hakakian and
honoring Susan Sager for her many years of service to the Austin
community. As a table captain, I am hoping we can fill a Kol Halev table
for this event, which raises a significant portion of the total
contributions for the JCAA’s annual campaign. When you participate in
Mosaic, your campaign contribution helps fund the wide range of programs
at the J and in the local Jewish community, including Jewish Family
Service, senior and early childhood programs, teen and family programs,
sports and fitness, and cultural arts. It also provides support to our
extended Jewish family in Israel and throughout the world. Mosaic is
always a fun and inspiring luncheon program. Mark your calendar for
Wednesday, February 28 from 11 am – 1 pm at the Renaissance Hotel.
Contact Debby Kalk at <debby@cortexlearning.com>,
or at home at 442-8829, or cell 791-0793.

CKH Members Jordan Statman and Kari Davis (both
13 years old) are active members of the Austin Angelfish Synchronized
Swimming Team. On Sunday, January 21st, the Austin Angelfish will host a
clinic for prospective new Angelfish. Olympic Gold Medalists
Becky Dyroen-Lancer and Jill Sudduth-Smith will be the clinicians. The
clinic will be held at the Town Lake YMCA from 8:15 - 12:30. The cost is
$25 if the swimmer registers in advance or $35 at the door. In addition
to the clinic, the fee includes a swim cap, nose clip and mid-morning
snack. If you have a little mermaid between the ages of 8 - 13 who loves
to swim and dance or do gymnastics, then synchronized swimming is the
perfect sport for her! The swimmer must be able to swim standard swim
strokes for several lengths of the pool and tread water for 2 minutes
without tiring. For more information, please contact Jordan, Kari, or
their mothers; or contact Cheryl Cook, head coach, at 567-1943 or e-mail
her at <synchrocc@aol.com>.
Special Tapestry Encore Event, Nostalgia,
Thursday, March 1st, 7:30 pm, JCAA Community Hall. The musical
performance, Nostalgia, is based on a personal, yet universal
story of one woman's escape during the 1956 revolution from war torn
Budapest. From Communist occupied Hungary to freedom in the United
States, international song stylist and jazz vocalist (and CKH member), Judy
Alpert, will weave her moving story in the popular songs of the era.
Tickets will be available at the door the evening of the performance.
General admission - $11; Seniors, JCAA Members and Students - $9. For
information: 453-5365 or <judyalp101@aol.com>.
