Congregation Kol Halev Newsletter,
February 20, 2007 / 2 Adar 5767

----------------------------------------

This Week at Kol Halev:

Kabbalat Shabbat, Friday, February 23rd, 7:30 pm, ECP Multi-purpose Room.  (NOTE TIME CHANGE.)
To the children of our congregation members and services attendees: Please join Natasha Schultz during the adult services in room 127. We have a group of children ages 5 - 11 that meet after candle lighting from about 8:00 - 8-45 pm. We will make masks and puppets for Purim and act out short skits during February and have some other activities before Passover. We only meet during the regular 7:30 pm services, not during Friday Night Alive! or early services. See you there!

Haverim Ke'tanim (Little Friends), February 24th, 5:00 pm, la Madeleine (restaurant), 3418 N. Lamar Blvd. (map).
After a wonderful learning and worship experience featuring stories, music, arts & crafts, games and a kid-friendly Havdalah service, the kindergartners, pre-schoolers and their families can stay for dinner and get to know each other, schedule play-dates, etc.

Kol Nashim: Voice of the Women - Cantors Robbi Sherwin and Francyne Davis-Jacobs in Concert!  7:00 pm, JCAA Community Hall.
(Preceeded by Havdalah.)  Our next event in honor of Kol Halev's 10th Anniversary is a special concert - with some surprises!  This is not a cantorial concert in the traditional sense, rather a concert of music that has influenced and inspired Cantors Robbi & Francyne.  Get ready to sing along!  The event is free, but donations are welcome!

Sundays in the Park (with Rebbe), Sunday, February 25th, 10:45 am, Central Market Café, 4001 N. Lamar Blvd. (map).  (NOTE TIME CHANGE.)
“Sundays in the Park with Rebbe” is the title of Rabbi Baker’s Sunday morning series of discussions at the Central Market Café from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  This year’s series features topics taken from “You Be the Judge,” a book by Joel Lurie Grishaver which presents a number of provocative ethical dilemmas, quandaries, and challenges with a Jewish, spiritual or moral twist—and a proposed Jewish resolution, all of which is fair game for our discussion over gourmet coffee and nosherei (little stuff to nibble).  Here are the kind of the dilemmas we’ll consider:  The Kippah That Was Too Trustworthy, The Nolan Ryan Rookie Card Caper, Can You Cheat at Torah?, and How Long Is ‘Til Death Do Us Part’?

Torah Study, Tuesday, February 13th, Noon, CKH Office.

....  Next Week  ....

Rebbe & Rebbetzin's Tisch, Friday, March 2nd, 6:30 pm, Rabbi Kerry & Lynda Baker's home.
Shabbat as it should be - at home, surrounded by family and friends with great food, stories, songs, and of course, schmoozin'!  A great Kol Halev tradition, all are welcome to the home of Rabbi Kerry, Lynda & Emily Baker.  Please bring a dish to share: dairy/pareve only. Please call (512) 419-0945 or email Rabbi Baker <rabbi@kolhalev.org> to RSVP.

Celebrate Purim with Kol Halev, Saturday, March 3rd, 6:00 pm, ECP Multi-purpose Room.
We will start with fun and games for kids of all ages. At 7:00 we will have our folk service followed by a special presentation of "Shushan Squares" (remember the old Hollywood Squares?). We will wrap up with a costume parade and judging with Rabbi Baker's special awards.

Torah Study, Tuesday, February 27th, Noon, CKH Office.

Adult Education - Jewish Values, Monday, March 5th, 7:00 pm, CKH office.
Rabbi Kerry Baker will teach a four week course called “Being Jewish Means Acting Jewish: Essential Jewish Values and How to Live Them”.  The class meets on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. during March (except March 12th when we will observe Spring Break).  [This course is part of a series of Monday evening adult education classes led by Rabbi Baker.  Topics of subsequent classes are: “Being Jewish Means Thinking Jewish: Essential Insights of Modern Jewish Thinkers” and “Being Jewish Means Experiencing Jewish: Essential Ways Jewish Mystics Encounter the World.”  These classes are open to CKH members and their friends (from whom a donation is requested).  All these classes count toward preparation for adult bar/bat mitzvah, as well.]  Call CKH (419-0945) or Rabbi Baker (947-6000) for more information.
