Sundays in the Park (with Rebbe), Sunday, April 1st, 10:00, Central Market Café, 4001 N. Lamar Blvd.  (map)
“Sundays in the Park with Rebbe” is the title of Rabbi Baker’s Sunday morning series of discussions at the Central Market Café from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  This year’s series features topics taken from “You Be the Judge,” a book by Joel Lurie Grishaver which presents a number of provocative ethical dilemmas, quandaries, and challenges with a Jewish, spiritual or moral twist—and a proposed Jewish resolution, all of which is fair game for our discussion over gourmet coffee and nosherei (little stuff to nibble).  Here are the kind of the dilemmas we’ll consider: The Kippah That Was Too Trustworthy, The Nolan Ryan Rookie Card Caper, Can You Cheat at Torah?, and How Long Is ‘Til Death Do Us Part’?

Pesach in the 'Hood, Sunday, April 1st, 3:00 - 5:00 pm, Central Market Café, 4001 N. Lamar Blvd.  (map)
Featuring music, arts & crafts, food! Bring your chometz (leavened products not eaten on Passover) to donate to the Capitol Area Food Bank.  Music by: Jewish kids choirs and Sababa (www.SababaMusic.com) with Robbi Sherwin, Scott Leader, Steve Brodsky, Rich Stanmyre, Steve Dubin, and Sam Jordan.

Congregation Kol Halev's Shabbaton is an opportunity for congregants of all ages to share a complete Sabbath experience, combining learning, meals, fun, and worship. From welcoming Shabbat on Friday evening through Havdalah the following evening, we will take part in a variety of active, hands-on learning activities for all ages, as well as family-friendly Shabbat services. Some activities will allow congregants of different ages to learn with and from each other, while others will be tailored to particular age groups, from tots to teens to adults. This is an opportunity to spend an entire Shabbat immersing ourselves in Jewish learning and fun, exploring the meaning of Shabbat and family, and deepening our connection with Judaism and with one another. For more please contact Sherry Blum via email, <sblum@austincc.edu>.

Host a Soldier for Seder
Support our Jewish soldiers and their families during Passover!  The Austin Community Relations Council (CRC) has invited the Jewish soldiers and their families from Fort Hood to join us for a Passover seder on April 2 and April 3, 2007.  Let us know how you would be willing to support our troops!
We are looking for:
  - Families to host a soldier (and their family) to a seder in the home
  - Families to host a soldier (and their family) at a community seder
  - Individuals to underwrite the cost of soldiers and their families attending community seders
Contact Dana Epstein at 735-8012 or <dana.epstein@shalomaustin.org> with questions or to sign-up (before March 21st).  Let us all celebrate the Festival of Freedom with those who defend it!

TAKS Test Conflict Information
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has scheduled the first administration of the fifth (5th) grade Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) mathematics test for Tuesday April 3, 2007.  As this date conflicts with the first day of Pesach, our children are entitled to take the test on an alternate date with no penalty.  For more information, visit the ADL web site, http://www.adlsouthwest.org/view_article.php?article_id=221.  If you are feeling particularly put-out with our government for ignoring our religious traditions, call TEA or your legislator or the governor.

Jewish Veterans History Project
The Jewish War Veterans of America Post 757 is proud to be participating in the Austin-Travis County Veterans Exhibit at the Austin History Center, July, 2007 to January, 2008. Our goal is to create an archive the military experiences of Jewish veterans who are from or have connections to Central Texas.

The Post will create its own Archive, and also convey the material to the Veterans Exhibit. To be included in the Exhibit, we need to receive your materials before April 20, 2007. An informal gathering for those wanting to participate in the project is being planned for April 8.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the Jewish community to collect information and create a historical archive about the service of Jewish veterans in the military. Jewish veterans and active service members are asked to complete a questionnaire, donate photos, military documents, letters, stories, articles, videos, CDs, etc., telling about their military experience. Please no flags, equipment, or uniforms.

We especially would value input from those who have recently (after 1960) served in the military. Contact Neil Goldman, 512 514 1798 or <ngoldman1@austin.rr.com> to obtain more information.
