High Holy Days Volunteers

The High Holy Days are just around the corner. Amazing. The first night of Rosh Hashanah is Wednesday, September 12th. We already have several volunteers both from previous years and brand new volunteers. But we still need help.

We are looking for a few more people to help with set-up and decorations, break-down, parking, tickets, the Yizkor book, and Children's Services. Maybe you and a few friends would like to volunteer for set-up or break-down together. If organizing is your thing, we need someone to compile the Yizkor book. If anyone, especially our teens, is interested in helping with the Children's Services, please contact Hal Weiner.

Also, our fabulous shofar blower is unavailable this year. Any brave takers?

If you would like to volunteer, but are not sure of how or where or when, contact one of your friendly, neighborhood High Holiday committee members -
Rachel Cooper <rfcooper@gmail.com>
Hal Weiner <HWeiner@aol.com>
Alissa Zachary <alissainaustin@gmail.com>         We are all in the CKH directory.

One size doesn't fit all & we can help you find an enjoyable, comfortable way to participate.

Kol Halev Gala

Mark your calendar for the Kol Halev Gala on Saturday, November 17th, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.  Congregation Kol Halev will celebrate its 10th year anniversary and Rabbi Kerry Baker’s 30th anniversary of his ordination, with a special gala called Starry Night -- a celebration event for the families of Congregation Kol Halev and the Austin Jewish community.

Starry Night will be a fabulous gala with food, drink, entertainment, and live and a silent auction. That’s where you come in  ....

First, save the date and come help us have a wonderful celebration and fund-raising event.  Second, help us make this a night to remember by volunteering.  Marcia Hoffman <sungoddess47@hotmail.com> is the general chair of the Gala Committee.  If you have specific skills or interest please email Marcia with that information. This will be a special event if each of us steps up to help.  If you can help with the auctions by organizing or soliciting donations, contact Michele Chandler at <mchandlerlmsw@sbcglobal.net> or 762-3663.

Dining for Darfur - Austin, Monday, August 27th  .....  mark your calendar now!

Did you ever wonder: "What could I do to help end the genocide in Darfur ?"
Here's one easy step:  have a meal in an Austin restaurant participating in the "Dining for Darfur" dine-out on Monday, August 27, co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Association of Austin and GSD&M and supported by ADL, AAIM, a number of religious congregations, and many other community organizations and community leaders in Austin.  Participating restaurants will donate 5% of their gross sales to the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), 100% of which will be used for AJWS's nonsectarian humanitarian relief efforts for the victims of Darfur .

Other, larger steps would include recruiting a restaurant to participate in the Austin "Dining for Darfur" event and encouraging your congregation or other community organization to support the event.  For a list of current supporters, visit this link.

About AJWS
Since 2004, AJWS has been providing basic health care, water, therapeutic feeding centers, medicine, activities and programs for children, and education to many of the displaced and traumatized people who have been violently forced from their homes and are now living in camps in Sudan and Chad .  Recognizing that humanitarian aid is crucial but will not stop the genocide, AJWS (www.ajws.org) helped to found the Save Darfur Coalition (www.savedarfur.org) to mobilize a coordinated interfaith response to end the crisis.

We Need Your Help
Your help is necessary for this project to be successful. Volunteers are needed to solicit the participation of Austin restaurants, to spread the word, and to help with materials about the project and Darfur.  For more information, to volunteer, or to become a participating restaurant or a supporting congregation/organization, please contact Alex Winkelman at diningfordarfuraustin@shalomaustin.org.
