Visions of Israel Film Series, The Army and the
Military Experience.
Film: The Wooden Gun (Roveh Huliot) (1979)
Thursday, December 13th, 6:30 pm, JCAA, $5 per person (free for anyone
that served in Tzahal).
Set in Tel Aviv in the 1950's, this film focuses on the differences between two rival groups of Jewish pre-teens, the Sabras, or native-born Israelis, and those who immigrated from Europe. A questioning of the emphasis on military as expressed by children playing war games, and its implication for morality, community, and personal fulfillment. Set in the strife-torn town of Tel Aviv in the mid-'50s, this incisive Israeli drama depicts the gap that separates two groups of young people living there: the native-born Israelis, or "Sabras," and the European immigrants who sought refuge from the Holocaust. [91 min. In Hebrew with English subtitles.]
Discussion facilitated by Etty Brish following the
film and insight on her role as a soldier during the Yom Kippur War.
Call (512) 735-8032 to register.

CIRCLE OF LIGHT links these traditions through themes of light, hope, faith, joy, love, family and giving, while honoring the differences each traditions offers.
