Visions of Israel: Israeli Filmmakers and Images of
the Jewish State, Thursday, January 24, 6:30 pm.
This six-part film series celebrates the diversity of Israel through the
medium of film in coordination with the Jewish Heritage Video
Collection, a project of the Jewish Media Fund, Charles H. Revson
Foundation. This film series is also co-sponsored by the Austin
Jewish Film Festival.
The Legacy of the Holocaust
Film: Operation Jonathan
Synopsis: A salute to the Israeli soldiers who rescued Jewish
hostages held by terrorists and a statement about the need for vigilance
after the Holocaust. On June 27, 1976, Air France Flight 139, en
route from Tel Aviv to Paris, was hijacked by Arab and German terrorists
and commandeered to Entebbe, Uganda. In short order, the 103 Jewish and
Israeli passengers (joined by the French crew) were separated from the
others, who were then freed. The terrorists' demand: the
release of 43 Arabs held in Israeli prisons in exchange for the Jewish
lives. The Israeli government negotiates, while secretly planning
one of the most daring rescues ever attempted. Operation Jonathan
reenacts these heart-stopping events in realistic and thrilling detail,
giving us an inside look at the decisions that led to the dramatic
rescue. Many of the figures who played a role – Yitzhak Rabin,
Shimon Peres, Yigal Yadin, and others – appear in cameo roles, lending
the film a unique authenticity. (124 mins.)
Professor Pascale Bos will discuss the effect the Holocaust has had on contemporary Israeli society. [Pascale Bos is a professor of Germanic Studies at UT Austin, affiliate in the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Texas, Comparative Literature, and Women's and Gender Studies programs. She has published on German Jewish culture, Holocaust literature, and second generation Jewish writing. Dr. Bos is the author of "German-Jewish Literature in the Wake of the Holocaust: Grete Weil, Ruth Kluger and the Politics of Address." (Palgrave 2005)
To register, call (512) 735-8032 and mention registration code JE3605. Cost is $5 per screening or $25 for the entire six-part series. For more information about the event in history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Entebbe.
