Bar Mitzvah Project

1,500,000 Innocent Children Perished in the Holocaust. In an effort to remember them, the Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies.  The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition for all to remember.

The Tarsi family has started to discuss the Holocaust and A. J. has decided to adopt the Butterfly Project as one of his Mitzvah Projects.  He is hoping to help collect handmade arts-and-crafts butterflies for the Project, per the following:

    * Butterflies should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.
    * Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but one-dimensional submissions are preferred.
    * Glitter should not be used.

If you or your family would like to help make and submit butterflies, you can either contact us and we will be happy to arrange to pick them up by June 28 and mail them, or you can mail them directly by June 30 to:

Holocaust Museum Houston
Education Department
5401 Caroline St.
Houston, TX 77004

Please include the following information if you mail them directly:

    * Your name,
    * A. J. Tarsi's Mitzvah Project, Congregation Kol Halev, Austin, TX
    * Your address,
    * Your e-mail address, and
    * The total number of butterflies sent.

Feel free to call (699-7913) or email <jactar@gmail.com> us if you have any questions.

Florence Melton Adult Mini-School
"As the new year of 5769 begins, want some Drama in your life?"

Join the current Florence Melton Adult Mini-School students on a trip through the drama, intrigue, mystery, intellectual challenges, spirituality, richness, and continuity of Jewish life.  You'll find stories of war and peace, family feuds, battles for revenge and for power, passion, romance, and legal wrangling.  Our ancestors have stories that could rival the best action adventures.  And it's all in the name of our heritage as Jews.  Try the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School.  The Mini-School for Maximum Learning. I t's not rated PG and it's not for kids.

Informational "Taste of Melton" sessions coming up:  Tuesday June 24th, July 22nd, and August 19th, all at 7:00 pm.

Seventy-five Women Cantors from Around the World in Free Concert!
Monday evening, June 23rd, 8:00 pm, Congregation Agudas Achim sanctuary,
Contact: Cantor Robbi Sherwin, Conference Chair: <robbisherwin@austin.rr.com>

Come experience the Soaring Sound of Sisters in Sacred Song as the Women Cantors' Network conference attendees present a FREE concert to the Austin Jewish community!  The concert will feature original pieces commissioned by the network, including one by Austin's own Abby Gostein.  The cantors will be followed in concert by the acclaimed folk/rock Jewish band, Sababa!, of which Robbi Sherwin is a member, in an intimate acoustic setting.  Dessert for everyone to follow.

The International Women Cantors' Network (over 300 members around the globe!) proudly welcomes its members to Austin for its 26th annual conference - the first time the conference has been held west of the Mississippi River!  Austin organizers include Conference Chair, Cantor Robbi Sherwin, Abby Gostein and Amy O'Desky.  They have been joined by a trans-Texas committee who have spent 3 years planning an outstanding experience for the WCN.  Special thanks to Congregation Agudas Achim and the JCAA for hosting/housing the conference.

Our tzedakah project is donating our hair to Zichron Menachem (www.zichron.org) an Israeli organization whose Hair-to-Wig program makes wigs for children suffering the affects of cancer - whether Israeli or Arabic.  Unlike Locks of Love, they WILL take hair that is dyed, grey or less than 10" in length shorter lengths will be sold and proceeds will go to the wig program.  If you can generously donate 6" or more, PLEASE contact Cantor Sherwin: robbisherwin.com or 467-7270.  In addition, if you can donate trinkets or baked goods to the hospitality bags to welcome the women cantors, contact Augusta Gelfand, Hospitality Chair:  <augusta@ecpi.com> or Robbi Sherwin.  Help give these women a real Austin welcome!
